Our Toyota truck got two flat tires on the eight-hour, pothole-ridden drive to the Borana tribes of Ethiopia. The flats prolonged our bumpy journey to 11 long hours. The next morning we awoke to find yet another flat. We decided to buy a new tire, yet each small roadside shop at which we stopped told us the same thing: Go to Kenya. Without Kenyan visas, we drove to the border and explained our situation. The customs official looked at our visa-less passports, and then waved us through to get what we needed.
A few hours later, we needed to purchase some meat for our stay. Photographer Guy Gerrard paid for a live goat, at the suggestion of our hosts, and they slaughtered it when we arrived in the village (after tying him to the roof of our truck for a short but noisy drive). Guy kept wondering how he would categorize the expense back home. Should he label it as “meals for several days” or just “one goat”?
