Forgiven and Beloved

Scooped up in His arms

I spend Sunday afternoons reading the newspaper. Recently Samson, my dachshund, wanted to play instead. He’d sit on my paper, I’d push him off, and he’d come back. After the third time, I was annoyed: “Get off my paper!”

In rebellion, Samson circled around, stood next to me, and peed.

Frustrated, I cleaned up the carpet. I watched him slowly walk the perimeter of the room–along the wall, around the TV and shyly toward me. He knew.

I can be like that. My sinful nature may manifest itself in a critical comment or selfishness. When convicted by the Holy Spirit, I’m hesitant to approach my heavenly Father–standing with my tail between my legs, like Samson.

Samson tentatively crawled into my lap. I looked into his eyes and reassured him, “I’m not happy with what you did, but it’s OK. Momma loves you.” When I hugged him, I felt him collapse onto my chest.

I’m going to do things that grieve God, but He won’t withdraw His love. Rather, He scoops me into His arms, affirms my forgiveness in Christ Jesus, and reassures me with His unconditional love.
