Needing to get in out of the Florida heat, John E. Lundberg stepped inside a local Dunkin’ Donuts® to cool off. Once a professional carpenter, John was now out of work and living on the streets.

A stranger, Ted Seymour, saw past the week’s growth of facial hair and dirty clothes. He offered to buy John breakfast. “Normally I don’t ask or accept things from other people,” says John, “I will work for what I need to get.” But that Sunday morning, John accepted a cup of coffee and a strawberry cream-filled donut, and the two men sat down to talk.

“Right away I could catch the Christianity in him,” remembers John (above), who was raised in religious institutions but had no understanding of the Bible or Jesus’ life.

Ted befriended John, bought him some clothes and gave him a copy of his favorite evangelistic book, Josh McDowell’s More Than a Carpenter. He has given more than 1,000 copies to fellow airplane passengers, businessmen and homeless people like John.

“The book explained the simple basics of Christianity,” says John, “The last page said, ‘Do you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?’ As I read those words, tears started flowing, and I knew my life was going to change. And it has.”

John re-established his carpentry business and now worships alongside Ted at a local church.
