Sunshine reflects on Lake Balaton as people from the coastal town of Keszthely, Hungary, go about the marketplace. Walking toward the pier is a group of girls with Larissa Dawe. The American, fresh out of an American high school, just made friends with Kata Decsov, a local high-school student from Keszthely.
They met at Speak Out, a summer mission camp only a five-minute walk from the lake. Campus Crusade for Christ staff members in Hungary hosted Larissa’s summer mission trip, recruiting high-school and college students to lead the day camp. It is part of a strategy with Student Venture, the high-school and middle-school ministry of Campus Crusade.
The training Larissa (above, on left) received from staff members helped her turn everyday conversations toward spiritual topics. By serving as a day-camp language tutor, Larissa got to know her group, and it’s where she first met Kata (above, on right).
“God laid her on my heart and I continually prayed for her,” says Larissa. As their friendship grew, Larissa told Kata her own story of how she came to know Christ and about how Kata could become a Christian.
At first Kata seemed very quiet. But then later, Kata admitted that she had accepted God. “She told me God is something to hold onto,” says Larissa. “Kata seemed to change from feeling hopeless to now having hope.”
