“Send me. I’ll go.”

On a bus full of kids from one of Denver’s most impoverished neighborhoods, Maryland college student Leah Sattler sang those lyrics from a popular Christian hip-hop song.

“Don’t sing that, because He’ll do it,” joked a young girl named Adriana. Her words surprised Leah, both in their terseness, but also because Adriana was aware of how God would use a willing heart.

Leah was already living that out on a month-long Summer in the City mission trip with Here’s Life Inner City, the compassionate urban ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. “I wanted to see if I would be interested in doing [ministry] full time,” Leah says.

Her openness also left an impression on the Campus Crusade staff members. “What I appreciate about Leah is that she was very teachable,” says Shawn Taylor, director of the project. “She always had a stronger desire to understand than to be understood.” With 19 other students, Leah learned more about God’s heart for those in need, both spiritually and physically.

Leah became the 11th student from Summer in the City-Denver to return to the city in the last three years. She invested another three months with a local youth center. There, her experiences taught her more about how God can work.

“I got to coach basketball,” Leah says. “When we first started, if a kid got hurt, the other kids would laugh.” She taught them about playing as a team and showing respect for others. “Now when someone gets hurt, they all take a knee, wait for them to get up, and clap.”

Back at school, Leah is more focused than ever. “After being in Denver and living that life,” she says, “I’m working hard so I can get a degree and do something in the inner city or overseas.”

Leah’s still singing, “Send me. I’ll go.”
